Carlsen Wins Tal Memorial 2012 by Winning His Last Round Match!

It's hard to call it a surprise when Carlsen the world's top-ranked player wins any chess tournament. But in this case, it's a pretty apt description of what happened in the final round of the Tal Memorial, as all the results went the way of Magnus Carlsen to vault him into clear first place.

After 5 rounds Alexander Morosevich seems to be on the road to the title with a 4/5 score following an impressive win over Aronian, at this point he is a clear 1 point ahead of the closest pursuer, in the game over Aronian he simply quell all efforts of Aronian to complicate the game and went on to demolish 4 center pawn of Aronian who seem to be dangerous all throughout, but Aronian consumed too much time in finding the right plan that cost him the game, after this win however Morosevich suffered 3 succesive loss that deprive him his chances for the title.

After the 8th and penultimate round, it was Italian/American youngster Fabiano Caruana who was in the pole position, and seemed set to clinch victory today. He led Carlsen and Teimour Radjabov by a half-point, with four more players sitting a full point back. But unfortunately for Caruana, his final round opponent was Levon Aronian, and the Armenian had some serious home preparation to uncork with the white pieces. Aronian won in 54 moves, making it very unlikely that Caruana would win the tournament outright.

But he still very well could have shared first, were it not for the efforts of Carlsen. On the Black side of a Ruy Lopez, Carlsen reached a very comfortable position out of the opening, then slowly built an advantage to score an impressive win. With Radjabov only managing a draw against Hikaru Nakamura, that left Carlsen as the clear winner on 5.5/9. Caruana and Radjabov shared second on 5 points.

A full recap of the final round action can be found here. The results won't cause any major shakeups in the world rankings, though Carlsen did both extend his lead at the top of the ratings list, and gain two rating points, inching himself closer to Kasparov's record of 2851. According to the unofficial live ratings list, Carlsen's rating is currently 2837.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley (1) who is the real winner?

Pacquiao vs. Bradley (1) who is the real winner?

After the controversial Pacquiao Marquez (3) which created more questions than answers, Pacquiao is in the news again this time after his controversial defeat via split decision over the new WBO welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley, to be honest this is the only fight of Pacquiao that I did not watch live because I somehow lost interest in the fight, but after hearing comments from my countryman, social networking and even the media, I was force to watch its replay and to make sure that I would miss a thing I set the video a little slower and here’s my observation.

First the two boxers are both gentleman and Bradley to my surprise is a worthy opponent for Pacquiao, now what really happen? Throughout the match Bradley is obviously the aggressor which is what exactly required when you are a challenger, but I would honestly say that Pacquiao landed the more telling Blows, and throw a lot more punches than Bradley.

Now what affected the judges vote, the two judges who voted 115-113 in favor of Bradley may have counted all Bradley punch when the two Boxers hold its other, and for Pacquiao his consistent pushing down of Bradley whenever the two boxers hold its other, apparently to avoid those accidental head butts which the Pacquiao team are so concern about, may not look pleasing to the two judges, in fact the referee always remind Pacquiao to refrain from using those “technique”.

But the team Pacquiao failed to realize that they are fighting an American boxer, in American soil, with three American judges and an American referee, plus an American promoter, with this condition Pacquiao and his team should have realized that the only way to win is to knock the challenger out which is actually doable if they prepared something like their preparation for bigger boxers like Dela Hoya, Cotto and Margarito, in these fight Pacquiao is clearly superior but in his last two fights fighting a smaller boxer seems to me don’t fit Pacquiao or shall I say he is not effective when fighting in these condition.

There are also other factors that affect the preparation of team Pacquiao the rift between his Trainer (Roach) and his conditioning coach (Ariza) is also a factor here how can you maximize a boxers potential when the two top men in your preparation are not even talking to one another? We should also take note that Pacquiao is now a congressman and Bible preacher which adds more to his distraction, how you can fight in the ring at the same time preach verses in the Bible, he may be worried all the time that he may have been violated his own preaching.

Now let’s go back to the question again who is the real winner? Both boxers are winner Bradley for his new Crown and unblemished record will surely increase his worth, for Pacquiao despite losing in the scorecards is still a winner with his guaranteed purse and pay per view share plus a possible rematch with Bradley which will surely surpass the first fight is also a reason for Pacquiao to smile this is like one step backward and two step forward, you lose but you gain more.

But who is the real winner? The Americans although divided in opinion are winners here for hosting such an event, the media for having hot items to write, the Filipino’s, as again it is almost zero crime in the Philippines during the fight, and of course everybody else know him Mr. Bob Arum the boxing kingpin who will be the most benefitted person in this controversy.

Chess Cube on Facebook

I am now on my second week of testing Chess Cube in facebook to be able to write a review of this application, Chess Cube is stricter than its counterpart “Chess in Facebook” which is the subject of my previous article.

Chess Cube has what it called Fair play checking where it discouraged using Software’s to have an advantage over your opponent, it is more practical for players who only want to play and practice chess.

Every day the site gives away free cubits for visiting the site and if you are clever enough you can multiply those freebies to your advantage and you don’t need to shop for cubits the currency for this application in my almost two weeks of testing the application my cubits grow to 4k considering that my local rating is below 1900 but in Chess Cube I manage to reach as high as 2178 and at this stage opponents are scarce as I started being rejected or cancelled more often so I have no Choice but to challenge the higher rated 2200-2500 which is probably masters in real life as they easily annihilate me in whatever time control I use, oh yes you can choose from variety of time control that the application offers they have bullets and standard time controls which makes the application more attractive to many players.

To sum it up Chess Cube is a good site to practice and play but I will still recommend “Chess in Facebook” for serious players and for preparation for an event due to almost perfect variation that the SW’s offer.

Next on my topic will be Chess.com which I think is similar to Chess Cube, see you soon guys after my testing.
